About Original Northwood

A Baltimore City Maryland Community

Historic Original Northwood is a friendly, diverse, covenant community located in northeast Baltimore City. Development of Original Northwood began in 1930 by the Roland Park Montebello Company, an offshoot of the Olmstead Brothers. Home construction in the neighborhood and surrounding areas continued through 1953, and the trends of the era are well represented in the unique architecture of each home and corresponding walkways.

The neighborhood’s canopy of mature trees shades a variety of architectural styles including Tudor Revival, Half-timbered Tudor Revival, Georgian Revival, Federal Revival, New England Colonial, Cape Cod, Williamsburg Revival, Early American, English Cottage, and Norman Cottage. Each of the 396 homes in Original Northwood exhibits a timeless high design quality and thoughtful construction by lead architect, John A. Ahlers. Ahlers deliberately included the natural terrain and mature canopy in his design of the neighborhood, making it among one of the first completely planned communities in the nation. The neighborhood was designated a Historic District in 1998.

Original Northwood residents enjoy homeownership in a suburb-like environment with easy access to downtown. It is one of the hidden gems of Baltimore City, tucked quietly between Loch Raven and The Alameda just 15 minutes from the Inner Harbor and convenient to 695, 295 and I-95. This diverse, friendly, active, multigenerational community is a place that has welcomed homeowners for decades.
